"One becomes a conductor from a deep urge to communicate; it's not just making music - you can do that in an orchestra just as well. It's about communicating with people. And - naturally - about converting your vision on the music into sound. And the way you do that is by going and standing in front of it and picking up that conducting baton.

Nowadays, symphony orchestras are at a level, at which they could even play without a conductor. But then you get a 'middle-of-the-road' sound, compromises. But I want them to play the way I see fit. You have to be willing to stick your neck out. I'd rather have people saying that they don't like it than have them thinking nothing at all."

Biography
Dick van Gasteren studied cello, orchestral conducting, art history and law. He began his musical education at the age of nine, playing the cello. He then proceeded his study at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, with Anner Bijlsma and graduated in 1988. At the University of Leiden, Van Gasteren studied art history and Law, and graduated to his master's title in 2003.As a cellist, Van Gasteren attended master classes with Heinrich Schiff and Gottfried Hoogeveen amongst others, was a stand-in with several Dutch orchestras and performed recitals throughout the entire country, e.g. in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw. Even at a young age he had a keen interest in conducting. He studied orchestral conducting with Jan Stulen and received the Hoger Getuigschrift Orkestdirectie in 1990. During the summer of that same year, Van Gasteren was a laureate with the famous conducting master class in Siena, under leadership of Ferdinand Leitner. At this occasion, he was chosen to conduct the closing concert, which was aired on Italian television. One year later, he became a laureate once more, this time with the Wiener Meisterkurs. After his education at the Royal Conservatoire, Van Gasteren received a special grant from the Ministry of Culture, which enabled him to take lessons with Bernard Haitink in London. He assisted Haitink with the Royal Concertgebouworkest later on, during the big Mahler festival when he was entrusted with conducting the Fernorchester. This production was part of a large Mahler television documentary.In The Netherlands, Van Gasteren conducted the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and the Noordhollands Philharmonic Orchestra. In Germany, he conducted numerous opera productions with the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, which all received appraisal from the critics. Since 2000, he has succesfully conducted the Nürnberger Symphoniker in renditions of (amongst others) Stravinsky (Firebird), Beethoven (5th Symphony), Mendelssohn (Italian Symphony), Respigi, Saint-Saëns and Berlioz. In november 2003, Van Gasteren appeared in two editions of the Dutch youth television programme "Het Klokhuis", which focused on the profession of conductor.For a period of ten years, Van Gasteren succesfully conducted the Viotta youth orchestra with many great works of orchestral literature (Stravinsky, Mahler, Bruckner, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich) and was seen and heard regularly in the great concert halls, such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and on Dutch radio and television. Van Gasteren also conducted five very gratifying tours with the Viotta orchestra (e.g. Prague, Salzburg, Florence and Venice). During the summer of 2007, Van Gasteren lead the Viotta youth orchestra to win first price Summa Cum Laude in the International Orchestra Contest and he conducted the closing concert in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein.In May of 2008, Van Gasteren conducted the Nederlands Strijkers Gilde (Schönberg - Verklärte Nacht) and in the framework of the Indonesion festival Pasar Malam, six sold out performances of the Dutch-Indonesian opera Attima (1917) by Constant van de Wall.In October of 2010, Walburg Press published a book Van Gasteren has written with the title "About youth orchestras and the didactics of conducting".

In the Netherlands, a growing number of youth enjoy their music hobby in a group setting. But playing in an amateur orchestra is not just a pleasant pass-time. Since quite some time, making music in an orchestra has been acknowledged as having beneficial effects on both cognitive, musical and emotional competence. Recent scientific studies are in agreement with this train of thought.Which makes it all the more remarkable that up to very recently, there wasn't any didactic literature available that covers collective musicianship. In this publication, Van Gasteren goes into the nature, origin and possible goals of the phenomenon of the youth orchestra. He studies meaning and purpose of making music together and the valuable contribution that playing in an orchestra can be towards the psychological development of a child in general. He formulates aims and logistical conditions which function as a basis for his design of a practical method of conducting for youth orchestras. During the learning process, he puts the exchange between individual and collective first and he strives for an optimal development of both.The four basic musical parameters, duration of sound, pitch, loudness and timbre, function as a musical frame which is being used to illustrate the methods of the conductor. "About youth orchestras and the didactics of conducting", is recommended to conductors (during their education), orchestra managers, music teachers and musicians, but also to adult amateur musicians and those involved in the music society.Available NOW.
